Welcome
Welcome new students to the UUC Shotokan Karate club website. This site is designed to give all those interested, whether seasoned martial-artists or people new to the arts, a bit of background knowledge to Shotokan Karate. In this site you'll find information on what Karate is as a whole and the different styles found. Feel free to ask any questions you may have via the email address which can be found at the bottom of every page or alternatively call along to one of our training sessions and ask what you will of us there. So happy browsing and we hope you find this site both useful, and informative.
2009 CUSAI Intervarsities
The 2009 CUSAI Intervarsities took place on the 22nd February, jointly hosted by the Karate clubs of NUIG and GMIT. Check out the Image Bank for images from the event, our Bebo and Facebook pages for videos and the Events page for a detailed description of the day.
Despite reduced numbers compared to previous years, we once again competed to a very high standard, placing 3rd overall out of around 10 teams. This time especial honour was won by the female club members from both Coleraine and Magee - 5 first places and several more second and third, from only 5 karateka!
Well Done to all those who took part, and special thanks to those who made the effort logistically possible
Information
Our club welcomes anyone to come and give Karate a try - our members include everyone from absolute beginners to trained black belts, and - contrary to expectations - gender, previous experience and current fitness are unimportant - the symbolism of the white uniform that many karateka wear is that, apart from the coloured belt that denotes advancment of training, all are considered equal.
Shotokan Karate is a high yield, high impact style of self defence which seeks to maximise body power through correct application of technique, covering a range of strikes, kicks and grappling techniques. Through training, karate students find they develop in three main areas - self
defence, health and fitness, and self confidence. The ultimate goal of Karate, however, is the perfection of the character of the individual.
Gradings
Our club gradings are held every three months in the club under the watchful of our club instructor, Sensei Joe McCullagh. All the kihon, kata and kumite needed are covered in class well in advance and we are always helping our students towards grading at the highest possible standard.
Club Membership & Fess
Club Members must have Sports Centre and Sports Union Membership, each of which costs £10 for students and is available through the Sports Centre. Club Membership Fee of £3 is automatically paid as part of your Sports Union Membership whenever you join. Each training session costs £2.50 for students and £3 for non-students and externals, both club membership and training costs go directly to club funds. When you begin training with us you will be asked to pay a nominal fee to cover your martial arts insurance.
